Petritoli has risen around the 1000 a.C., on a side road that branch off from the Sabinia, the principal road connecting the cities of Ascoli Piceno and Fermo.

In 1200 it became an independent Municipality, was governed with its own Statutes.

In 1800 in the era of Napoleon, it became Canton of mandamento; in that country Petritoli reached the maximum architectural and cultural splendor with the construction of the three most meaningful monuments: the Three Arch, the Civic Tower and the Theathre of the Iris.

Of notable tourist interest also the church of Saint Marie to Martyres, containing the precious organ of the 1777 work of Gaetano Callido, the Room of the Wooden Choir, the Sanctuary of the Madonna della Liberata and the nineteenth-century Ancient Stamperia Fabiani.

In Petritoli, every three years, the prestigious International Contest for Oboe takes place in honour of the inhabitant of Petritoli, Giuseppe Tomassini.

From the year 2007, Petritoli is also identified as the “Town of wedding”; the town where a lot of foreigners couples, with numerous guests, decided to come and get married.
