Jūrmala was the top holiday resort and tourist destination for high-level Communist Party officials, particularly Leonid Brezhnev and Nikita Khrushchev.
Today Jūrmala attracts tourists with long, sandy beaches, warm water, beautiful villas, as well as romantic wooden houses in the Art Nouveau style. Jūrmala is a place where Baltic German, pre-war Latvian, Soviet time, and modern European cultures meet.
