Introduction
Welcome to the Pio Monte della Misericordia! You now have the opportunity to explore one of the most ancient and important Neapolitan charitable foundations and its extraordinary artistic heritage. This is an institution that today still continues to carry out its work in the same building and church that it originally built 400 years ago. The institution was created in the seventeenth century with the specific purpose of alleviating the sufferings of the poorest members of society, in a century when all forms of welfare were entrusted to the Church and to the generosity of individuals. Today, true to the spirit of its founders, the Pio Monte della Misericordia is more active than ever and continues in its commitments as a completely self-governing body.
The donations received and the revenue produced by its patrimony are dedicated to the sick, to orphans, the disabled, the elderly, and today also to the victims of drug addiction.
The activities of the foundation rest on the voluntary participation of its members. This Audioguide will enable you to understand the history of the Pio Monte della Misericordia and to appreciate not only the works of art contained in the church but also the numerous masterpieces in the gallery of paintings on the first floor, with a collection of the important paintings donated to the foundation through the centuries. In addition, it uses modern systems of cataloguing to preserve a rich historical archive, of the greatest value not only to the history of the foundation and the city of Naples, but also of outstanding importance because of the nature of its documents.
