The development of art in Ukraine in the middle to second half of the 15th century was marked by the country's complicated historical situation. Ukrainian art culture continued to develop under conditions of lost national statehood. The Byzantine church tradition continued to dominate in painting, which played a leading role among the visual arts and determined its theological character. The system of the interior church design, which represented the dogmas of the Incarnation, the Second Coming and Salvation, became established. The iconostasis, or the pre-altar partition –– templon (from the Greek "temple"), served as its foundation. It separated the altar from the nave and had two required tiers: the “Sovereign” tier and the “Deesis” tier.
