Tourism in Istria developed in line with global trends that meant rest and leisure for the aristocracy in the early 19th century. Within the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy, Kvarner, Istria and the coast of Trieste represented the closest destinations on the sea that the newly built railway had connected directly to Vienna. Tourism also had an upward trajectory for the Italian administration when Opatija and the Brijuni Islands were developing their hotel and tourist offer. However, other coastal towns that were mutually networked via organised trips in Istria slowly caught them up. One of them was Poreč.
