Tourism in Istria developed in line with global trends that meant rest and leisure for the aristocracy in the early 19th century. Within the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy, Kvarner, Istria and the coast of Trieste represented the closest destinations on the sea that the newly built railway had connected directly to Vienna.
