Audio tour La Via del Romanino - Itinerary

From Brescia to Valle Camonica, passing through Franciacorta and the Brescia and Bergamo shores of Lake Iseo, through a journey into the art of one of the most important interpreters of Lombard painting: Girolamo Romano, known as Romanino.

This is 'La via del Romanino', an art itinerary following the footsteps of the great Brescian painter, which winds its way through Brescia, Bergamo, Malpaga, Rodengo Saiano, Capriolo, Villongo Tavernola Bergamasca, Monte Isola, Pisogne, Bienno and Breno. A territory that guards the treasures created by Romanino between the early 1500s, the first known work in this area dates back to 1509, until the early 1960s.

Churches, convents and museums, all places in which to rediscover the indelible traces left by Romanino.

Departing from Brescia, our itinerary makes a stop in the heart of the city, the old cathedral and the new cathedral, the church of the patron saints Faustino and Giovita, the church of the convent of San Francesco d'Assisi, the cloister of the convent of the Corpo di Cristo, the Santa Giulia museum, the diocesan museum and the Tosio Martinengo picture gallery.

From city to city, Bergamo and its province also host works by Romanino. The basilica of Sant'Alessandro in Colonna and Malpaga Castle.

The artistic itinerary also passes through Franciacorta, stopping in Rodengo Saiano, inside the Olivetan abbey of San Nicola, where the guest refectory was frescoed, and in Capriolo, inside the church of San Giorgio, which houses a resurrection painted on wood.

Our journey moves northwards, skirting the shores of Lake Iseo.

Villongo, Tavernola Bergamasca, Monte Isola and Pisogne are the towns that can boast the presence of Romanino's works. In Villongo the frescoes in the small chapel of San Rocco, in Tavernola Bergamasca, the frescoes attributed to his early years, in Monte Isola a fresco inside the oratory of San Rocco, and in Pisogne perhaps the Brescian painter's most majestic work, the entire church of Santa Maria della Neve.

Our journey of discovery of Romanino's works ends in Vallecamonica, in Breno, where we can admire the frescoes in the Church of Sant'Antonio and in the village of Bienno, where the Brescian artist painted the presbytery of the Church of Santa Maria Annunziata.

The Romanino Way is an extraordinary journey through the works of Girolamo Romanino, a unique artist, who made the places that host his work unique. An artist considered the forerunner of Caravaggio's naturalism and modernity.
