Museo Residence of Judge General Vasyl Leontiiovych Kochubei

Dear, Friends! You are welcomed at the residence of Judge General Vasyl Leontiiovych Kochubei, the Museum of the National Historical and Cultural Reserve “Hetman's Capital”.

Around the museum, there is a wonderful park, a monument of landscape art of the XVII-XVIII centuries with an area of almost 10 hectares. The city visitors have the opportunity to walk along the park's cozy alleys and get a boost of energy from the mighty centuries-old oaks that have been standing here since Cossack times.

The residence was built in the second half of the XVII century. This is a unique example of Ukrainian civil architecture of the Baroque era. The residence belonged to a military and political leader of the Ukrainian Cossack state, Judge General Vasyl Kochubei, and then to his descendants. This building has survived all the main milestones in the history of Baturyn, starting from its rise as the residence of Ukrainian Hetmans and destruction in November 1708.

And in the XX century, it became the center of Baturyn's museum studies. The first museum in its premises was opened in 1925, but it did not last long. After World War II, the building was restored, and in 1975 the Baturyn Museum of Local Lore was opened on its premises. And in 1993, based on this museum, the Historical and Cultural Reserve “Hetman's Capital” was created.

The modern museum exposition was formed in 2013. These are about two hundred exhibit items that allow you to plunge into the history of this unique building, into the subjects of Cossack trials, learn interesting facts from the life of its owners, in particular, the love story of Hetman Ivan Mazepa and Motria Kochubei.
