Audio tour Sergey Smirnov

Sergey Smirnov (1922), an Honored painter of Russia, has strikingly developed the main principles of its outstanding predecessors of the Russian national painting, including the Leningrad’s one.

Sergey Smirnov was born in the region of Ivanovo, and he moved to Leningrad with its family in 1924. There he began his first steps in the painting world, getting trained in the art school with a teacher E.Lujkovsky.

S. Smirnov participated in the Great Patriotic War, in the Naval battalion. He passed through the Kingisepp battles where he was wounded. After the war Smirnov worked in the painting alliances of USSR, he was one of the participants in the First National Art Exhibition "Soviet Russia" (Moscow, 1960). Then in 1960 he entered the Repin Art Academy, in the studio of Joseph Serebriany.

Since 1985 the painter spends a lot of time on the Baykal river and so he created a number of artworks dedicated to the Siberian nature.

As the major part of the painters from this generation, Smirnov worked mostly with the war theme – but in the same time he advanced his subtle artistic sense in the landscapes and portraits.
