Over het museum

St Peters stands proudly at the top of a ridge on the eastern side of the Gipping Valley, above and apart from the houses of the village.  Claydon was described in 1827 as 'a thoroughfare village, where the road divides' and, until the recent bypass was built, its village street was very busy with traffic.  The tower of St Peter's, set in such a commanding position, is visible for a considerable distance.

St Peter's was commissioned by eccentric High Church Rector, George Drury.  It is stunning, full of vibrant stain glass and extravagant carvings.  Drury himself, was responsible for the design of the stained glass in the east and west windows and he may also have carved some of the stonework.  The surviving 19th century fittings are all of high quality and also bear the stamp of Father Drury's personality.

Within a mile of St Peter's as the crow flies, are two other medieval churches:  St Mary's Barham, which is now the parish church and St Mary's Akenham, which, like St Peter's, is in the care of what is now The Churches Conservation Trust.
