About the museum
Welcome to the Lilibeo Archaeological Museum in Marsala!
You are inside a building that once housed a historic winery. This is why it is called Baglio Anselmi—named after its owner and founder, Carlo Alberto Anselmi, who produced excellent Marsala wine here.
The museum was born following an extraordinary discovery. In the early 1970s, a precious Punic ship was found off the coast of the Stagnone, brought to light thanks to archaeologist Honor Frost. To best preserve it, the Baglio, which had been unused for decades, was requisitioned by the Marsala city administration: a suitable place was needed to reconstruct and protect the wreck.
This is how the museum took shape, later acquired by the Sicilian Region and inaugurated in 1986.
And the Punic ship is not the only treasure kept here!
Walking among the museum’s display cases, let yourself be captivated by the echo of a living past. The artifacts are exhibited in chronological order, according to their contexts and thematic criteria. Each room is dedicated to an archaeologist who contributed to reconstructing the history of Lilibeo: discover their personalities by reading the plaques at the entrance to each room.
And don’t forget to take some photos, to bring back a memory of this unique experience!
