Audio tour Permanent collections - room 2 - The begining of the XXst Century

In the early twentieth century, a new company called Société Française de fabrication de Bébés et Jouets (SFBJ) emerged, superbly combining French quality and German industry. The resulting character dolls and bébés reflected heightened sensitivity.

The period addressed in this room is when classical beauty and an idealized vision of the Victorian age competed with more realistic new dolls, less formal and sometimes humorous, a transition which characterized the first two decades of the twentieth century.

The aesthetics revival movement of this time motivated renowned artists, such as Jean Ray, Willette, Hansi, Stefania Lazarska, Arthur Lewin-Funcke, Rose O’Neill and Grace Drayton, to invest in the creation of dolls which are today highly prized by discerning collectors.
