Steam engines are the symbol of the First Industrial Revolution, which took place between 1700 and 1800, and were used for almost 200 years both in fixed industrial systems, for example in textile factories to operate looms, and in transport. Their use brought about an epochal change for society which went from a predominantly agricultural socio-economic system to a modern industrial system.
During the 1900s naval and stationary steam engines (pistons) were replaced by diesel engines.
The section houses both steam engines and gas and diesel engines used in industry.
