About the museum

One of the oldest in Naples,  the Church of  San Giorgio Maggiore was built between the end of the 4th and the beginning of the 5th century, in the early Christian age. The old building, called "Severiano", since it was built thanks to the bishop of Naples saint Severo, was dedicated to the Divine Savior; the inscription to San Giorgio was added in the 9th century. During the Middle Age it was one of the four churches in Naples, together with the church of Santi Apostoli, San Giovanni Maggiore and Santa Maria Maggiore alla Pietrasanta.
