Now, you can go towards the footbridge leading to the inner bailey.
We’ve just left the outer bailey used for farming and family use.
The Lord used to live in the inner bailey, with his family, the guards, and the knights. There were many buildings.
The inner bailey is located on a mound. This is surrounded by the moats (ditch filled with water). They are under our feet. After digging the moats which surround the inner bailey, the earth was taken to make an artificial mound upon which the dwelling place of the Lord was built.
The surrounding wall is called the curtain wall, dating back to the 12th century and was built of stones.
Slashed with arrow slits, it is crowned by a round path (called a “Wall Walk”) designed to keep watch over the surroundings.
Now, you enter into the inner bailey.
