The granite rock of Mont Saint-Michel was originally called Mont Tombe. In 708 , the Archangel Michael appeared in a dream to Saint Aubert, Bishop of Avranches, and asked him to build a sanctuary in his name. In 966, a community of Benedictines settled here and built their first church. At the same time, a market town began to develop below the church to accommodate the first pilgrims. - 1 Overhang door
