At Mont Saint-Michel, for over 1,300 years, history has been interwoven with the personal stories of its monks, inhabitants, pilgrims and visitors.
From the Hundred Years' War to the French Revolution, from Romanesque architecture to the latest work to restore the maritime character, this timeless rock takes us back through the centuries...

The granite rock of Mont Saint-Michel was originally called Mont Tombe. In 708  , the Archangel Michael appeared in a dream to Saint Aubert, Bishop of Avranches, and asked him to build a sanctuary in his name. In 966, a community of Benedictines settled here and built their first church. At the same time, a market town began to develop below the church to accommodate the first pilgrims.
