The Kazan Sea is a conspicuous stage of the East European platform's geological history, the main actions of which were on the territory of modern Tatarstan in Kazan century Permian period (270-267 million years ago).
There was a huge shallow gulf extended along the young Ural Mountains – the Kazan sea – which lost connection with the Tethys Ocean and communicating with the open ocean only through the narrow channel from the North in the east of the East European platform at this time. The sea gulf seen in the direction from south-east to north-west.
The territory of modern Tatarstan and neighboring regions were in the central part of the sea with its western and eastern shores. The paleogeography of the Kazan time was characterized by contrast asymmetry of landscapes: humidity and an abundance of rivers was typical for eastern shore, dry and white desert was typical for western shore.
