La fase más intensa de la historia de los túneles de Gibraltar se desarrolló durante La Segunda Guerra Mundial, periodo en el que el peñón jugó un rol vital en el ámbito belico del Noratlantico y el Mediterráneo. La longitud total de los túneles aumentó considerablemente durante la guerra, de 11 a 40 kilómetros.
