About the museum
The history of the Holy Trinity, nicknamed "Old Swedes" church dates back to the year 1638. Swedish and Finnish settlers arrived on the ships named the Kalmar Nyckel and Fogel Grip. The settlers established Fort Christina in what is now Wilmington, Delaware.
Our site was used as a burial ground for the Fort, but also holds signs of earlier use by the Lenape Native Americans.
Construction of the Holy Trinity "Old Swedes" Church began in 1698 and was completed in 1699. Reverend Erik Björk was sent by the King of Sweden to lead the growing Swedish colonial settlement.
